The Denominación de Origen Rías Baixas
The Denominación de Origen Rías Baixas was recognized as such in 1988 and can be found in Galicia, fully integrated in the Atlantic Region. This designation includes five sub-areas: Ribeira do Ulla, Val do Salnés, Soutomaior, Condado do Tea and O Rosal; all located in the South of Galicia. We are therefore talking about Atlantic Wines, elaborated in a mild climate where frequent rainfalls combine with the necessary sun hours to make the grapes fully develop.
The DO Rías Baixas hosts a wide range of different White grape varieties: Loureira Blanca or Marquis, Treixadura, Caiño Blanco, Torrontés and Godello, but also some Red varieties as Caiño Tinto, Espadeiro, Loureira Tinta, Sousón, Mencía, Pedral and Brancellao.
However, the flagship variety in this DO is the Albariño grape, in fact, it represents 94% of the overall area of vineyards planted in the region. The Albariño is a spherical, small-grained, golden grape, which yields an alcohol content raging from 12º to 13º and an acidity that can vary from 7 to 9 gr/l.
As a result, the wines obtained from this cepage present a straw, bright, yellow color with greenish and golden reflections. On the nose, they have fine and distinguished, floral and fruity aromas that impress pleasantly, medium intensity and medium-long persistance. They are soft and fresh in the palate, well-bodied, with a fair alcoholic strength, a balanced acidity and harmonious and ample nuances. The aftertaste is pleasant, elegant and complete.
