Discover the Wines from Sumarroca

Because we do enjoy trying and tasting new things, expand the grape verieties, enjoy new vinification methods, terroirs and new wineries, to surprise our customers and ourselfs, we have a many new entries in our cathalog for the month of March. Among them, there is one standing above the rest, the wines from Bodega Sumarroca.

This winery, of Catalonian origin, owns 464 Hectares of vineyards, enough to allow them control over the whole process: from the field to the bottle..

The winery has properties in the A.O. Rueda and A.O. Montsant, but the core, the place where it all started, is the A.O. Penedès: 403 Hectares where a wide range of grape varieties are grown and treated with affection, making it the largest property in this A.O.:

- Whites: Macabeo, Xarel.lo, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat and Gewürztraminer. - Reds: Tempranillo, Merlot, Grenache, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Pinot noir and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Sumarroca has an extensive wine portfolio from which we have selected 13 references that we would like to introduce to you in this blog entry:

Temps de Flors 2013 White wine Grape variety: Muscat, Gewürztraminer and Xarel.lo. Tasting notes: A special wine that aims to harmonize the virtues of three quite aromatic grape varieties. It reveals a scent of floral notes and ripe summer fruits. The mid-palate shows itself opulent, balanced and round.

Sumarroca Riesling 2013 White wine. Grape variety: Riesling. Tasting Notes: a fresh wine with a slightly acidic contrast. It presents a yellow colour with greenish reflections. Complex and elegant aromas with hints of apricot and pear, combined with reductive notes of tar and woodland undergrowth.

Sumarroca Muscat 2013 White wine Grape variety: Muscat Tasting note: a very nice white flowers combination. Soft in the mid-palate, structured and long.

Sumarroca Gewürztraminer 2013 Young white wine. Grape variety: Gewürztraminer. Tasting note: bright yellow colour. Delicate and pleasing aroma with floral hints of rose and jasmine. On the palate it is silky and fresh, with a long and perfumed aftertaste.

Sumarroca Brut Nature Gran Reserva 2010 Cava (Sparkling), aged for an average of 3 and a half years. Grape variety: Macabeo, Xarel.lo, Parellada and Chardonnay. Tasting note: pale yellow colour. Fresh aroma and fruity notes from the cuvee and the yeast ageing. Easy to drink, with a dry, yet creamy attack.

Sumarroca Gran Brut Blanc de Negres Cava (Sparkling), aged for over 36 months. Grape variety: white (Chardonnay and Parellada) and red grape varieties (Pinot Noir) combined. Tasting note: bright, pale yellow colour with persistent, small bubbles. Very interesting, complex nose that sets it apart from the conventional features of cavas and sparklings. A kind and creamy brut.

Sumarroca Negre 2013 Young red wine. Grape varieties: Merlot, Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon. Tasting note: It is soft and velvety with an graceful, raspberry and cherry intensity. In the mid-palate, balsamic notes freshen the wine.

Sumarroca Chardonnay 2013 White wine. Grape variety: Chardonnay. Tasting notes: soft attack, fruity and fresh.

Terral 2011 Red wine, aged for 16 months in French oak barrels. Grape variety: Handpicked, selected grapes of Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Tasting notes: Full-bodied, strong and complex.

Sumarroca Rosé Pinot Noir Brut Reserva Cava (Sparkling) Rosé. Grape variety: a medium depth pink color and red fruit aromas, with notes of ripe cherry, strawberry and plum. The attack is fresh with a persistent and pleasant aftertaste.

Sumarroca Blanc de Blancs 2013 White wine Grape variety: Macabeo, Xarel.lo, Parellada and Muscat. Tasting notes: it exhibits a rich and fresh bouquet with hints of white fruit. The mid-palate is lively and fruity.

Núria Claverol

"This is a tribute to our mother, her love of the land is a constant in her life." is the dedication from her three children to her mother, Nuria Claverol, wife of the founder of the winery.

Cava (Sparkling) Gran Reserva, ageing for a period between 28-36 months. Grape variety: Xarel.lo, Chardonnay and Parellada. Tasting note: stands out, firstly, for the number of small bubbles that form persistently in the glass. It has a straw yellow colour and is very aromatic. Outstandingly refined in the palate, vivid and intense, it bubbles beautifully, with a slightly sweet note rounding the aftertaste.

Bòria 2011 Red wine, aged in new French oak barrels for 12 months. Grape variety: Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Tasting note: dark, cherry colour with violet-garnet notes. It shows a powerful aroma with spicy, concentrated notes of blackberries, plums and cherries. The attack is shown elegant and fleshy with ripe tannins and notes of toasty, cedar wood.
